Recyclables and ostriches on Nami Island

On Saturday, Matt and I traveled to Nami Island with Rosa and Jaemo. Nami Island was named after General Nami, whose tomb is there. The island is famous because a Korean drama, “Winter Sonata,” was filmed there, and so it gets many tourists from Japan and China coming to see sites from the show.

The island is about 30 minutes from Chuncheon by car. Then you take a five-minute boat ride to get there. Matt and Jaemo wanted to zip line to the island, but we didn’t make reservations in advance, and it was all booked.

It was the first day with no rain in weeks, so it was perfect to stroll around the island and enjoy the scenery. The island pledges to have responsibility for recycling, and there were many cool displays of recycled things around the island.

We also saw wildlife like squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits and ostriches. Yes, ostriches. I’ll let the photos do the talking here.

We were excited when we realized some ostriches were outside the pen. "I think he needs to use the restroom," I joked.

Imagine the surprised people in that bathroom! At least Mr. Ostrich had the good sense to head for me the men's room.

This man didn't seem too concerned to be sharing the sink with an ostrich, much like the man who strolled in past the ostrich in the bathroom to use the urinal.

  1. I just can’t get over these ostriches….their size, their posture, their decisions (bathroom stall)….it’s all too much! Classic.

  2. Photos are killer…..I’ve been listening to Lu’s stories of Soju from his Air Force days….and the ostriches….love the “explanations” ….and the version of “The Scream” really good metal work. Now that I think of it….the ostriches are really quite civilized aren’t they?….Too much Fun
